This episode is a micro pod and runs just under ten minutes. Typically in my micro pods I ask my guests twelve questions that pertain to artists of all disciplines. A few of my guests have asked me how I'd answer some of these questions. So, I figure it's only fair for me to walk a mile in their shoes, or at least the shoes they wear when they come over to my house to chat with me! So, from the point of view of an actor who dabbles in writing and illustrating...and podcasting...I'm answering the twelve questions.

This is the last episode of 2016! The show will be back on January 5th with all new episodes. In the meantime, keep in touch with me on Instagram and Twitter @jobozarth! And find the show on Facebook at Facebook.com/HerProcess and Facebook.com/thejobozarth.

It's the Her Process Bonus Episode! Today I’m chatting with actor, writer, producer, and director, Kathryn Michelle. She’s back again this week to answer twelve questions that I ask of all my guests, regardless of what kind of art they practice. And since she is such a multifaceted artist, I’m betting a lot of us can identify with what she has to say. Want Kathryn’s backstory and to hear how this working mom gets it all done? Check her out on episode 24. And now, here’s my ten-ish minute chat with Kathryn Michelle.

Nov 10, 2016

This is a special edition of Her Process. We're talking NaNoWriMo! I asked my guest from episode seven, writer/director Sandra Payne, to come back on the show. Sandra has written for Wishbone, Barney and Friends, she's written short films, award winning web series and commercials. In episode seven she told us that participating in NaNoWriMo is how she completed her first novel. This process is something she's really passionate about. She's back on the show to share the ins and outs, and ways to approach this month of daily writing, along with hints and tips to keep you moving along. This episode is for all of you writers out there, and those thinking about writing!

Nov 3, 2016

I'm so happy to share this chat with my dear friend, Kathryn Michelle. I met Kathryn on a film set in upstate New York over a decade ago, and we've been friends ever since. This lady gets more done in a year than most people do in five!

She currently has four projects in the festival circuit, and she talks about the benefits and reasons why a filmmaker would go the festival route. We also talk about the many hats she wears, often at the same time, during her productions, and how the common theme of story carries across all mediums of art that she practices. Oh wait, did I forget to mention graphic design...because she does that, too! And yes, story plays a big part there as well.

Kathryn talks about the challenge of writing and why she started doing it in the first place, and I loved hearing about the inspiration behind the characters she creates, both as a writer and as an actress.

As you can imagine, with all that Kathryn does, we cover quite a lot of ground. You know, my conversation with Kathryn made me think...if you're someone with multiple interests, and talents, why limit yourself? Kathryn does it all, and she inspires me to dive in and do the same! So lets get to it! Here's my chat with my wonderfully awesome friend, Kathryn Michelle!

In this episode, I'm chatting with singer, songwriter, pianist, Leila Milki. Leila began taking classical piano lessons at just four years of age. She pursued her studies under the practical and theoretical curriculum of the Royal Conservatory of Music. We talk a little bit about practical and theoretical study as they pertain to music, and why both are so valuable.  Leila's had some of the most fascinating jobs doing what she loves... making music. If there are any musicians reading this who are looking for ways to make a living playing music, give this episode a listen! She's also working on completing her first album, and funded it by doing a month long Kickstarter campaign. Leila tells us about the preparation and execution of the campaign, what really got people motivated to contribute, and tells us which social media outlet helped her the most during the process.

Leila has a strong connection to her Lebanese heritage, and she talks about how that love informs her music. She performs in English, Arabic, French, and Spanish. And, at the end of the show, Leila sits down at the piano and treats us to a piece from her upcoming album, sung in two of the afore mentioned languages. Listen to find out which two!

So, let's get to it! Here's my chat with Leila Milki.

In this week's micro podcast, I revisit pop artist, Drea. Drea was on the show last week for episode 22. She was so open and so candid. I just loved talking with her. This episode is a P.S. to Drea's full length episode. Today she answers twelve questions that can be asked of artists of any discipline. Now, here's eight more minutes with pop artist, Drea!

I'm so excited to share my chat with pop artist, Drea. She takes us on her journey beginning with piano lessons taught by her mom starting at age 5, to performing in her dad's church, to being a hip hop and break dancer in London, to graduating with a degree in Women and Gender Studies, to releasing her debut album in July of 2016, entitled No Vacancy.

Drea's is a story of getting to the core of who she is as a person, of staying true to herself, of embracing herself as a sexual being, of being an independent woman making a life and a career as an artist in the city of Los Angeles.

During our conversation, Drea opens up about some of the things she's seen in her three years of working in the music industry in LA. She's got solid advice for women in the industry. And, she treats us to a beautiful, stripped down cover of the title track from her debut album!

In this micro pod, which runs a little under nine minutes, Bonita will put a smile on your face. Her positive energy will reach out to you over the airwaves and make you just feel so happy to create!

This episode features author, Camilla Ochlan. Camilla answers twelve questions that can be asked of artists of any discipline. It's interesting to hear how my guests answers to these questions vary, and how they don't.

Camilla's work ethic and sense of self discipline is so inspiring. In a little over nine minutes, you'll hear what makes her tick as an artist, and how she gets it all done, and believe me, she gets a lot done in a day! To find out more about that, listen to Camilla in Episode 21.

And now, with nine minutes of wisdom and motivation, here is Camilla Ochlan.

Sep 15, 2016

I'm excited to share a chat with not one, but two amazing artists! I'm talking with Camilla Ochlan and Bonita Gutierrez, authors of The Werewolf Whisperer series. These two ladies are talented and well rounded artists on their own, writing screenplays, acting, producing, writing other books, doing martial arts...I could keep going! Let's just say they have a lot going on, and without missing a beat on their separate projects, they manage to come together to write this urban fantasy series. It's action packed, it's funny, it's sad, it's dark, it's so many things. And so far they've published two novels in the series and two novellas, including the recently released Beast Out Of Hell.

Camilla and Bonita write a past and present timeline that is so seamlessly executed, I just had to ask what their secret was to accomplishing this feat! We also talked character, genre, publishing, getting started as a writer, writing as a team, solo projects, and so much more!

If you're a writer, or have ever even entertained the thought of writing, or if you just love books, this is the episode for you!

In this episode I have the privilege of chatting with magician, Lauren Cohen. It's a privilege because, A) She's a wonderful human being, and B) She's a lady magician, and  you don't come across those very often. During our chat, we discuss why that is. Also, we talk about the fact that Lauren does close-up magic, which is even more of a rarity for women. Lauren shares how she goes about learning her tricks. She talks about reading her audience and dealing with hecklers. And, she shares her experience being a woman magician in what is predominantly a man's field. Some of her stories may surprise you!

It's the Her Process Micro Pod, Episode 19.5! Think of it as a 15 minute P.S. to Episode 19 with singer/songwriter, and busker, Katie Ferrara. I ask Katie twelve questions that can be asked of any artist in any discipline. It's fun to see how my guests' answers differ, and how they don't!

If you haven't heard Katie's Episode 19 yet, you can pop on over to herprocess.com for links to listen. You'll also see photos of Katie and fun facts you won't hear on the podcast. Just a tip...listen to Episode 19 all the way through to the end and you'll hear Katie perform her song, Jackets, live from my living room! And, I have to tell you, the sound on the recording is pretty great!

I'm chatting with singer/songwriter, Katie Ferrara. Katie is an introvert who found a way to connect with people through playing music...on the streets of LA. She has spend a lot of time over the last couple of years as a busker. During our chat she opens up about how she found empowerment through busking. And it's so interesting to hear her take on performing on stage in a venue (which she also does) vs. performing on the street. She talks about how she went from only performing solo to finding a love of collaboration. And, she opens up about something many of us can identify with...the conflict between pursuing a career and having kids and settling down. In fact, she's got a song about that very topic, which she plays for us at the end of the show!

It's the Her Process micro podcast! This episode comes in at just under fifteen minutes, and features illustrator, Shelley Couvillion from episode 18.

Jul 14, 2016

This week's chat is with illustrator, Shelley Couvillion. Shelley was kind enough to welcome me into her home to record this episode.

It's always such a treat to see the home, and the studio of an artist you admire. Now, usually when I picture the home and work space of an illustrator or painter, I imagine a bit of a lovely mess of paint, brushes, maybe drop cloths, pencils, and discarded drafts of illustrations strewn about. Shelley's space is absolutely lovely, but it is far from that artsy mess that I imagined. It's clean, neat, and everything has its place. She has a few of her own pieces tastefully hung, and no...there are no discarded sketches covering the floor. And, she manages to keep her space in working order with a two month old baby! How does she do it? She reveals her secret during our chat! ;)

As mentioned, in this episode we discuss the main action Shelley employs for keeping a clean work space. Shelley also tells us a bit about how she's developed her illustrative style, and how it has evolved in the course of going from drawing for comic books to illustrating children's books, and she explains the processes of both. She touches on the role motherhood plays in the projects she chooses to work on, as well as the types of illustrations she is creating these days.

Shelley's illustrations are, in my opinion, the perfect combination of dreamy and down to earth, much like the lovely Shelley herself! Give this episode a listen, and you'll hear what I mean!

This week's chat is with my dear friend, actress, April Bowlby. April and I met over a decade ago (wow, has it been that long?) in a scene study class. You might know her from her role as Alan's longtime girlfriend, Kandi, on Two and a Half Men. Or, you may recognize her as Stacy from six seasons of Drop Dead Diva. She's also starred in such films as From Prada to Nada, The Slammin' Salmon, and more.

In this episode we talk about acting technique, and how auditioning for a part and actually playing the part on set are two different things entirely. April shares how she prepares for auditions. She lets us in on how she presents herself when she's in the room reading for producers, and how she faces challenges on set. We talk about what it's like for a trained, working actress to be in such a rapidly changing field. We also touch on the subject of typecasting. There's so much good stuff in this conversation, but what I want you guys to know is that April has brought life to characters (like Kandi) who could otherwise easily be dismissed as the beautiful airhead. She has made these characters interesting, and has given them hearts and souls. Yes, she's made us laugh, but she's also made us care for these characters. And that, my friends, takes smarts.

There are questions that can apply to any artist, regardless of her discipline. Those are the questions I'm asking on the micro pod, twelve of them, to be exact. It'll be interesting to hear how the answers to these same questions vary...or don't.

I am so excited to present the first Her Process Bonus Podcast! It's a micro pod (this particular one is only ten minutes in length) featuring a little follow-up with the artist from the previous full length episode.

This week's bonus episode features singer/songwriter, Jaden LaRue.

Jun 16, 2016

This week's chat is with singer/songwriter, Jaden LaRue. I believe we first connected via Instagram. I saw that she had videos of herself playing music live on her feed, so I clicked play and I was hooked.

In this episode, we talk about human connection, something that is really important to how Jaden creates, and where and how she chooses to share her music. She's the founder of Silverlake Sessions, which brings together artists from LA and beyond to gather once a month and share their art in an intimate setting, where strangers become friends. The shows are secret, and you've got to get on the mailing list to have the chance to attend. More on that later...

Jaden also shares her experience of recording an album, and what she's learned from that process. And we talk touring, song writing, and so much more.

This week's chat is with graphic designer, Victoria Vu, of Paper and Type. Before we dive in, I want to mention that Victoria has also had a career in architectural design. For today, we're talking about her life in graphic design, but I do think it will be of worth to the listener to know of Victoria's background in architecture. I believe that these two fields require both creative work and precision work, and people who's brains naturally function in both of those planes, in my opinion, are so interesting. You can clearly hear both influences in the conversation!

In this episode, Victoria tells us about her first taste of the graphic design business at the age of seven. She shares the events surrounding her transition from architectural design to graphic design. And, she walks us through the process of operating her own petite graphic design company.

This week's chat is with Sanae Robinson Guerin. Sanae is a painter and stained glass artist. Sanae has been painting since way back in...2014. Yes, you read that right. 2014! And in that short amount of time, she's shown in over a dozen galleries. In fact, the first time one of her paintings was in a gallery was only around a month and a half after she started painting! I asked Sanae about her experience with these gallery shows, and she told me that she can't believe she had the hubris to enter her paintings in these shows. She didn't really know the ins and outs of the art world. She would hear of a show that had a topic that she happened to have painted, so she submitted. Now that I've gotten to know her a bit, I don't think it's hubris as much as it is the innocence of not knowing. It's like the fearlessness that we have as kids. What a gift to have had that as an adult, even if it was just there long enough to have that initial positive experience of entering new, "unproven" work in shows!

Sanae also talks about the importance of having a daily practice, and tells us a bit about what goes into making stained glass art. And, she shares the impact her mother has had, and will always have, on her art.

I'm so excited for you to hear more about Sanae, and the amazing story about how she started painting! So, here we go! I hope you enjoy my chat with artist, Sanae Robinson Guerin.

May 5, 2016

This week's chat is with Bari J. Ackerman, of Bari J. Designs. Bari designs art for products, and during our conversation she tells us exactly what that entails. As you're about to hear, Bari is the ultimate self-starter and self motivator, and her can-do attitude is infectious! In this episode, she talks about how she went from making handbags to sell at local boutiques, to selling on Etsy, where she found the market to be a bit saturated, and how the need to differentiate herself on there led her to design her own fabric. She shares how she took the leap from designing on the computer to painting, and we discuss the role social media, specifically Instagram, plays in her business and sales.

Bari was kind enough to squeeze me into her busy schedule on a recent trip to Los Angeles from her home in Scottsdale, Arizona, and I can't tell you how excited I was to talk with her. And I'm even more excited for you to hear what Bari had to say.

Apr 21, 2016

This week's chat is with Lisa Jey Davis. Lisa Jey is an award winning writer. She's a blogger, vlogger, and a painter. She's a Huffington Post and livestrong.com contributer. Her memoir, "Ms. Cheevious in Hollywood - My Zany Years Spent Working in Tinsel Town" became the #1 Best-Selling New Release on Amazon in its category. Lisa Jey is also a fitness and women's health professional and the author of "Ahhhhhh...Haaaaaa Moments with Ms. Cheevious", which is a yoga routine in an e-book. And she's got the upcoming "Getting Over Your Ovaries - How To Make The Change Of Life Your Bitch", which is a witty survival guide for women approaching 40 (or older) dealing with their own life change, or those witnessing it first-hand.

In this episode, we talk about how book publishing has changed in recent years, about the rise of self-publishing, and Lisa Jey shares her own self-publishing experience. She discusses what it's like to be an artist and a mother and how she had to separate who she was as a mom and who she was as an artist while writing and releasing Ms. Cheevious in Hollywood. She also talks about how blogging has helped her writing career. Oh! And I can't forget to tell you about her paintings, which you have to see! I'll provide a link in the show notes, along with photos, and fun facts over at herprocess.com.
