Today I’m chatting with the Hoopie Awards 2017 Hooper of the Year, USA, Morgan Jenkins. Morgan gave me a quick hooping lesson before recording this episode, and it really got my blood pumping! I totally understand why hooping is called a movement meditation. During the show, Morgan explains exactly what that means, and she talks about ambient hooping as part of the flow arts.

It's so refreshing to talk to an artist who is all about being inclusive. Morgan is part of a hoop troupe called Hooptown Hotties, and their motto is “you can hoop with us.” Don't you just love that? Using her background as a camera assistant in the TV and film industry, Morgan and the Hooptown Hotties make amazing hooping videos. She shares a bit about the ladies’ video making process, choreography, and creative motivation. …And she tells us the route she recommends for learning hooping.

We also talk social media, and how Morgan, aka Miss Mojangles, has utilized it to further her hooping career, while remaining true to herself, even online.

I had so much fun talking with Morgan, and yes…now I totally want to pick up a hula hoop and go for it! And after listening to this episode, you will too! So without further ado, here is Miss Mojangles herself, Morgan Jenkins.

This week's micro podcast runs a little over ten minutes and features letterpress printer and calligrapher, Nariné Riley. Nariné answers twelve questions that pertain to artists of all disciplines. These are the same questions I ask each of my guests. It's fun to listen to how their answers are different, and not so different!

And now, here's a little bonus time with Nariné!

Feb 9, 2017

I'm so excited to introduce you to letterpress printer and calligrapher, Nariné Riley.

Nariné tells us how the love of writing cards, and making her own cards led to a career in stationery and the art of letterpress. She works with a machine from the 1880s, and explains just what goes into making all of the beautiful cards you’ll find in her online shop, The Grits.

Nariné has experience working in stationery and paper stores, which paper lovers and letter writers will definitely recognize. She fielded submissions from artists and makers, and now she’s the artist selling her product to shops. She shares a bit of her knowledge from both sides of the fence, and gives some tips on how to turn your art into a business.

And for all of you lovers of calligraphy, Nariné shares how she got her start doing calligraphy and how she’s incorporated it into her business.

The thing that stood out to me throughout my chat with Nariné is how much she has loved every step of the learning process in both of these arts, and how she continues to grow and savor the work and the time it all takes. That is real passion!
