Today I’m chatting with milliner, Shurie Southcott. We start our conversation by discussing the history and the importance of hats through the decades, and we ponder how and when they fell out of fashion in most of the US (with the exception of the south), and Shurie tells us how she’s doing her part to usher hat wearing and the hat experience, and everything it represents, back into fashion.

She tells us how she became a milliner, where she gets her inspiration, and lets us in on what goes into the making of hats as far as the process, the fabrics and materials she uses, the different styles, how she charges for her art…and so much more! And she gives tips on how you can ease into becoming a hat person! And maybe even a hat maker!

See photos of Shurie's workspace, creations, get links to her website, and more over at www.herprocess.com!

If you’re a regular listener, then today’s guest is going to be familiar to you. I’ve asked letterpress printer and calligrapher, Nariné Riley, from waaaay back in episode 29, to come back on the show. The last time she was on, I got so into talking about letterpress, that I didn’t ask her everything I wanted to know about calligraphy! She graciously accepted my invitation to come back on, and today we’re giving calligraphy the attention it deserves.

From friends commenting on her pretty handwriting, to taking it to the next level by taking a calligraphy class, to how she sensed progress starting to happen, Nariné takes us on her continuing journey in calligraphy.

She also explains the difference between traditional calligraphy and modern calligraphy, and tells us where the, super popular on Instagram, brush lettering fits in. She has the best hint as far as a tool for practicing your calligraphy, and she shares her online resources for materials, courses, and community. We talk about everything from developing your own style, to how to price your calligraphy services.

There’s so much good stuff here! So, I hope you’ll join me in welcoming back to Her Process, Nariné Riley. And, here we go!

It's the Her Process bonus episode! Musician, Leah Capelle is back to answer twelve questions that I ask of all my guests. Think of this episode as a P.S. to episode 31, where Leah breaks down what it's like to be an artist in a rapidly changing music industry. If you missed it, you can catch up and see photos and fun facts about Leah at www.herprocess.com.

Today, Leah talks about those pre-show jitters, and why she appreciates them. She speaks honestly about creative and emotional block. And, we chat about wheat types of representation she thinks would be most valuable to her at this stage of her career. There's a lot of good stuff in this little 15ish minute episode. Enjoy!

In this episode I’m chatting with musician, Leah Capelle.

I asked Leah about the importance of vocal training, and guys, I have to say, her answer was fascinating! You’ll want to hear this…it’s really cool and might change the way you listen to and look at your favorite vocalists.

Leah is an artist who is very business savvy. In fact, she’s studying the business and legal aspects of the music industry at USC to be able to help herself, and maybe even help others. Talk about a great left brain, right brain balance!

And I especially loved listening to Leah talk about her latest song, and how it really came together once she brought it to her band. She talks about the process of bringing it to life, and really illustrates the inner workings of a musician and her band.

We talk about the importance of doing a music video, and the importance of audio, audio visual, and social media for today’s artists.

And just how do musicians make money from their music these days? And what’s the future of the music industry? We ponder these things and so much more during this fun, and informative chat.
