Welcome back to the Her Process micro pod! These bonus episodes consist of the same twelve questions I ask all of my guests, rapid fire style. It’s fun to hear how artists across different genres answer these questions sometimes very similarly, and sometimes not! Today I’m chatting with singer, songwriter, Dree Mon. If you missed her full episode, episode number 43, and you want to see photos and fun facts, pop on over to herprocess.com after the show. And now, here’s ten minutes of wisdom with Dree Mon!

I’m chatting with singer, songwriter, Dree Mon. Now, when you hear Dree Mon’s music it’s not what you typically think of when you hear the words “singer, songwriter”. Her style is described as “70s disco funk meets 90s R&B with a modern twist”. And her debut single Rebel Soul, along with the most fun video, is out now. And you can hear Rebel Soul end of this show!

After eight years in the music business, it was time for a rebrand, and Dree was up for the challenge! In this episode we talk about working with a publicist, how you can't just create art and expect things to start to happen in your career, and the importance of consistency. There's a lot of good stuff here, and I can't wait for you to hear it and be inspired!

I’m wrapping up this special series with two artists whose specific intent is to remain as active as ever in their fields throughout motherhood…and they’re doing just that.

Sandra Valde is a cinematographer whose work takes her on the road for up to three months at a time, and Shelley Couvillion is an illustrator who primarily works from home. In this episode, we discuss everything from full time daycare at 3 months old to the possibility of home schooling. From a work environment and artistic community that is extra supportive of motherhood to keeping pregnancy under wraps at work until month five.

For all the differences in their experiences in early motherhood, there are also some very universal similarities. And, these ladies are both making it work. Want to know how? Take a listen!

Welcome to the third installment of my special Her Process series on artists who are juggling the pursuit of art and parenthood! Today I’m talking with Lois Keller and Margaret Haas, two visual artists in two very different stages of motherhood. Lois is a fine artist with a background as a scenic artist. Her daughters are aged 10 and 14. Margaret is a calligrapher, does hand lettering, and owns a stationery store called Paper Pastries. (If you're in LA, you have to swing by!) Margaret's daughter is 20 months old. As you can see, today's conversation is coming from two very different vantage points. Three, if you count mine!

As a mom-to-be, this chat really made me think. These ladies got real and talked about the part of motherhood and career that aren’t often talked about…the part where things don’t necessarily go the way you thought they might have, the part where you make adjustments, both in the way you approach your work and in your way of thinking. We decided that the theme for our talk is "surrender". Take a listen, and you'll hear why.

The second episode in my special series on juggling art and motherhood features voice and screen actors, Paula Rhodes and Kay Bess. So inspiring!

We talk about having a baby when you are already set in your career and in who you are, and when you like who you are, and what that does to your psyche and how to deal with that...and keep your career going!

I'm so grateful to Paula and Kay for digging deep, and for being so open and honest. There's a lot of real talk here, along with lots of laughs.

Welcome to the first episode of my special Her Process series on artists who are juggling the pursuit of art and parenthood.

Between the two of them, today's guests have spent the better part of a decade…maybe longer…acting, writing, producing, and directing short films, features, and web series. I’m so happy to welcome Kathryn Bergh and Tanya Ihnen.

In listening to this episode, I realized that while there’s great information and there are fun tales of art and motherhood, these gems apply to artists in general…not only moms, not only women even. That said, if you’re a mom, or thinking of becoming one, stick around, because you’ll want to hear this!  I’m super inspired by these ladies…and our conversation has me feeling a little less nervous about becoming a mama and staying the course with my art.

This is the Her Process Bonus Episode! This micro pod is like a seven minute P.S. to Episode 38 with singer, songwriter, Maya. I’m asking Maya twelve questions that pertain to artists of all disciplines. And I have to tell you, she made the best argument in favor of having representation I’ve heard yet! In fact, all of Maya’s answers are thoughtful, and so much fun. Want more? Check out Maya’s pages on herprocess.com after the show. And now, here’s some quick inspiration with Maya!

Today, I’m chatting with singer, songwriter, Maya.

Maya started her musical career as a child, improvising blues on stage with her dad at the tender age of 11. Her current style is electric jazz, and you’ll get a taste of just what that means at the end of the show.

During our time together, Maya shares her experience of being on The Voice, Australia, and what it taught her about the music industry and about performing. She also tells us why she recommends other artist go on shows, such as the voice, and at what stages in an artist’s career she feels these types of shows would be most beneficial.

We talk social media, and the reasons why she doesn’t place too much emphasis on it. Maya takes us through her lyric and song writing process. We talk about booking gigs, and how she goes about it. And she has some great advice for artists who are just starting to pursue their careers full time.

The episode you're about to hear is filled with so much good stuff, and you'll get to hear one of Maya's songs at the end of the show! So, let's get to it! Here's my chat with singer, songwriter, Maya.

Today I have the pleasure of chatting with Amy Crosby, of the band Shitting Glitter. Yes, you heard me right, Shitting Glitter. Her band was part of the LA music scene for years, and now she is firmly rooted in Long Beach (just south of LA), which she says is a very supportive community for artists of all genres.

As an artist who has been at it for years, Amy gives us insight into the incarnations of a musician and her band. How band mates have come and gone (not from her life, but from the band), and how she’s come to the conclusion that it’s best to play with professional musicians that she brings into her band, rather than people who she relates to every day.

As of late, Shitting Glitter was on a little break, and in that time Amy’s been painting. She’s gone from someone who had never painted to someone who’s painted over 200 paintings in two years, and who’s work is showing in a gallery!

And now, Amy’s back in the music scene, and her latest project, the Nasty Woman Concert Series, is happening this Saturday, July 8th! Amy opens up about the reason and the feelings behind the Nasty Woman Concert, and she talks about the importance, especially in the current political climate, of taking action. Like I said, the concert is happening this Saturday, July 8th in Long Beach, California. Wait until you hear the lineup…it sounds like it’s going to be an amazing show!

For photos and fun facts about Amy that aren't mentioned on the show, pop on over to www.herprocess.com and look for episode 37.

It’s the Her Process Bonus Episode! This edition features comic book artist and author, Yumi Sakugawa. Just after recording episode 36, I asked Yumi to stick around and answer twelve questions that pertain to artists of all disciplines. Today I’m chatting with comic book artist and author, Yumi Sakugawa. I personally have several of Yumi’s books, including I Think I Am In Friend – Love With You, Your Illustrated Guide To Becoming One With The Universe, There Is No Right Way To Meditate, and her latest …The Little Book Of Life Hacks, How to Make Your Life Happier, Healthier, and More Beautiful.

And her comics! Yumi writes and draws feelings…feelings that we’ve all experienced. Her stories spring up around these deep truths, and I think that’s why, at least for me, once I started reading her work, I craved more. It’s like Yumi just gets me. :) She puts the human experience on paper. And in talking with her here on the show, and getting a glimpse into how she creates, I understand why her words and drawings evoke that sense of familiarity wrapped up in something that is just so magical.

We talk books, comics, zines, traditional publishing, self publishing, tools of the trade, inspiration, and really, so much more! I’m super excited to share with you, my chat with Yumi Sakugawa.

As artists, we can all agree that whatever we’re passionate about in life influences our work. It’s what our art is based on, really. Today's guest's story illustrates this point beautifully. I'm delighted to be chatting with singer, songwriter, Shelley Segal.

Now, a lot of us are taught not to talk about religion or politics in polite company. Well, one of those topics comes up in today’s episode. And I’m going to say a word now, that I’ll admit, as someone who was raised in the Christian faith, has always made me a little uncomfortable. The word is Atheism.

My guest today, has been called the “pin-up girl for the Atheist movement”. And I have to tell you, that her genuine caring for all people, just the love for humanity you can feel when you’re talking with her...well, I don't know what I expected exactly, or was taught to believe about Atheists. I will tell you that what I see in Shelley is the kind of person I hope I am.

Raised in a Jewish family, Shelley opens up about questioning certain beliefs, the journey to finding answers that resonated with her as a human being, and how these answers lead her to secularism. She shares how her search, and ultimately the community that she found, helped shape her music…well, a good chunk of it anyway. There’s so much more to her story, and so much more to her art.

During our chat, we also discuss how her career took shape, and the different genres which have influenced her many sounds. And, she explains Patreon to me, and why she and her fans love the Patreon experience she is able to create for them.

In opening up about her journey, Shelley illustrates a bit of her story through song. And oh, what songs she chose. You’ll just have to hear for yourself.

You know her from Days of Our Lives, Guiding Light, the Emmy award winning web series Venice, and so much more. I’m talking about Emmy Award winning actress, Crystal Chappell. And if it sounds like I use the word "Emmy" a lot in this intro, it's because this hard working lady has three of them! She acts, produces, directs, and I'm so grateful that she made the time to be on the podcast.

What you’re about to hear is a wonderful, caffeine fueled chat, where we cover a lot in a fairly short amount of time. We talk about how and why Crystal got into acting. She gives us a sense of how she approaches the craft and the characters she’s played. We cover her web series and how she’s been leading the way in the new media arena, and navigating the various pieces of that puzzle. And, we discuss her feature film, A Million Happy Nows, and so much more!

Today I’m chatting with milliner, Shurie Southcott. We start our conversation by discussing the history and the importance of hats through the decades, and we ponder how and when they fell out of fashion in most of the US (with the exception of the south), and Shurie tells us how she’s doing her part to usher hat wearing and the hat experience, and everything it represents, back into fashion.

She tells us how she became a milliner, where she gets her inspiration, and lets us in on what goes into the making of hats as far as the process, the fabrics and materials she uses, the different styles, how she charges for her art…and so much more! And she gives tips on how you can ease into becoming a hat person! And maybe even a hat maker!

If you’re a regular listener, then today’s guest is going to be familiar to you. I’ve asked letterpress printer and calligrapher, Nariné Riley, from waaaay back in episode 29, to come back on the show. The last time she was on, I got so into talking about letterpress, that I didn’t ask her everything I wanted to know about calligraphy! She graciously accepted my invitation to come back on, and today we’re giving calligraphy the attention it deserves.

From friends commenting on her pretty handwriting, to taking it to the next level by taking a calligraphy class, to how she sensed progress starting to happen, Nariné takes us on her continuing journey in calligraphy.

She also explains the difference between traditional calligraphy and modern calligraphy, and tells us where the, super popular on Instagram, brush lettering fits in. She has the best hint as far as a tool for practicing your calligraphy, and she shares her online resources for materials, courses, and community. We talk about everything from developing your own style, to how to price your calligraphy services.

There’s so much good stuff here! So, I hope you’ll join me in welcoming back to Her Process, Nariné Riley. And, here we go!

It's the Her Process bonus episode! Musician, Leah Capelle is back to answer twelve questions that I ask of all my guests. Think of this episode as a P.S. to episode 31, where Leah breaks down what it's like to be an artist in a rapidly changing music industry. If you missed it, you can catch up and see photos and fun facts about Leah at www.herprocess.com.

Today, Leah talks about those pre-show jitters, and why she appreciates them. She speaks honestly about creative and emotional block. And, we chat about wheat types of representation she thinks would be most valuable to her at this stage of her career. There's a lot of good stuff in this little 15ish minute episode. Enjoy!

In this episode I’m chatting with musician, Leah Capelle.

I asked Leah about the importance of vocal training, and guys, I have to say, her answer was fascinating! You’ll want to hear this…it’s really cool and might change the way you listen to and look at your favorite vocalists.

Leah is an artist who is very business savvy. In fact, she’s studying the business and legal aspects of the music industry at USC to be able to help herself, and maybe even help others. Talk about a great left brain, right brain balance!

And I especially loved listening to Leah talk about her latest song, and how it really came together once she brought it to her band. She talks about the process of bringing it to life, and really illustrates the inner workings of a musician and her band.

We talk about the importance of doing a music video, and the importance of audio, audio visual, and social media for today’s artists.

And just how do musicians make money from their music these days? And what’s the future of the music industry? We ponder these things and so much more during this fun, and informative chat.

Today I’m chatting with the Hoopie Awards 2017 Hooper of the Year, USA, Morgan Jenkins. Morgan gave me a quick hooping lesson before recording this episode, and it really got my blood pumping! I totally understand why hooping is called a movement meditation. During the show, Morgan explains exactly what that means, and she talks about ambient hooping as part of the flow arts.

It's so refreshing to talk to an artist who is all about being inclusive. Morgan is part of a hoop troupe called Hooptown Hotties, and their motto is “you can hoop with us.” Don't you just love that? Using her background as a camera assistant in the TV and film industry, Morgan and the Hooptown Hotties make amazing hooping videos. She shares a bit about the ladies’ video making process, choreography, and creative motivation. …And she tells us the route she recommends for learning hooping.

We also talk social media, and how Morgan, aka Miss Mojangles, has utilized it to further her hooping career, while remaining true to herself, even online.

I had so much fun talking with Morgan, and yes…now I totally want to pick up a hula hoop and go for it! And after listening to this episode, you will too! So without further ado, here is Miss Mojangles herself, Morgan Jenkins.
